Nicole's Notes: Volume 22 (June 1, 2015)

Happy Monday TOSH Parents and Guardians!
Meeting Elliot Bromley :-)

Believe it or not, this is the last full week of classes before Final Exams! We have 8 instructional days remaining before the Grade 11 Provincial Math Assessment on June 11 (and review classes for all our other students). The warmer weather is appearing and folks can sometimes feel like their energy "gas tanks" are on low this time of year. I see our teachers maximizing their time in class, covering the required curriculum and encouraging their students to get all assignments completed and in on time for assessment. I see our teachers offering extra help at all hours of the day...one even sat here for three hours on Saturday morning for any MAT 521B students who might be looking for some free tutoring. I see our teachers doing their part..but learning is a two way street! So, what can your son/daughter be doing this week and next to maximize the possibility of success in their Semester 2 courses?:
* attend all classes on time and stay engaged in the learning there
* ask for extra help or practice activities if there are concepts they do not understand in any course
* complete all assignments and see if anything outstanding still needs to/can be done
* ask their teacher how best to prepare for the final exam/assessment event and start doing a little bit each night at home so they don't feel too overwhelmed closer to exam day

Anything you can do to support and/or encourage the above would be greatly appreciated!

IT'S ELECTION TIME!
Our Student Council 2.0 model of student leadership is relatively unique in Canada and allows 7 Presidents from the various Councils in the school to come together on equal footing around the Presidents' Council table with me each month. One of these, however, is the only one elected by the student body. It is the mandate of the Student Government Council (SGC) to hear the "voices" of the students and bring their ideas and concerns to the attention of the Administration. We run our SGC elections in a way that mirrors the real democratic process, giving our students an opportunity to practice exercising their democratic right to vote before they actually turn 18. Thank you to Mr. Mike Trainor and his Political Studies class for the work they will be doing this week in that regard!

There will be a number of events leading up to Election Day on June 5. Candidates run as a "party" and each had a chance to reveal their platform during a noon hour rally in the caf last week. Each group of three indicates in advance which position each member is seeking: President (P), Vice-President (VP), or Communications Officer (CO). Here are the current parties who wish to form next year's Government and the members of each:

Citizens for Common Sense (CCS):
Jordan Smith (P)
Cooper Phillips (VP)
Matthew Arsenault (CO)

Gillis 2K15:
Jessica Gillis (P)
Robert Larsen (VP)
Kennedy Crossland (CO)

People's Representative Party:
Sebastien Roy-Garand (P)
Jayden Reid (VP)
Lucas Donovan (CO)

Students are encouraged to attend the Leaders' Educational Forum on Wednesday at noon in the Lecture Theatre to learn more about each party's ideas so that they can cast an informed vote on Friday. Thank you to all the candidates who have put their names forward for consideration and good luck in the race!

GRADE 12 ART EXHIBITION!

Student artists from Mrs. Evans' ART 621 course will be featured in an art exhibition at the Wyatt Properties from June 2-13. The launch for this event is Tuesday, June 2 at 6:30 p.m. and everyone is welcome to come anytime to enjoy the talent displayed there.

Student artists who will be featured are:

Jessica Procter
Devan Poirier
Alyssa MacLeod-Arsenault
Karley Doucette

PEI TOUCH A TRUCK!
The 2nd Annual "Touch a Truck" fundraiser will take place on June 7, 2015 from 1-4 p.m. at Slemon Park. Admission is $5 per person and infants are free. This fun, educational, hands on activity is great for people of all ages, and the proceeds raised will support the literacy and early learning programs at the Family Place. Mr. Harvey and some of our Automotive students will be there with the "Rat Rod" to help out, so plan to come out and support this community event!

BAND STUDENTS CELEBRATE!

Students from our Band program gathered in the school's cafeteria on Saturday evening with their parents and teachers, Mrs. Bryson and Ms. Hardy to share a meal and celebrate another awesome year of music making here at Three Oaks. We are very proud of the level of musicianship and talent shown by our students, and some students received special prizes throughout the evening (see below). Congratulations to all! We are also grateful for the time our Band Parents have put into supporting our student musicians this year. I saw lots of cars dropping kids off before early morning band practice many a day!! A special kudos goes out to the Band Parents Executive members: Mary MacKay, Cindy McLure, Kelly Perry, and Brenda Gavin. We appreciate you!

GRADUATION THINGS TO KNOW!

We're almost there Grade 12 Parents! Graduation for the TOSH Class of 2015 is scheduled for June 25 beginning at 6:45 p.m. at Credit Union Place. That will be a full day for our graduates, with the celebrations beginning at 9 a.m. with a breakfast for grads served by TOSH Staff. Report cards and transcripts are handed out and the class tree planted at the school. Students are then bused to the CUP for a morning graduation rehearsal that usually ends around 11:30 a.m. They are free after that until approximately 6 p.m. when they are asked to report to the CUP gown rooms in preparation for the graduation ceremony. The graduation is open to everyone and no tickets are required. The public are asked to be in the arena by the 6:45 p.m. start time so nothing will be missed! The Safe Grad activity follows directly afterwards and our grads will get more information about that at their Grade 12 meeting before the assembly on Tuesday this week.
