Nicole's Notes: Volume 2

Hello TOSH Parents and Guardians!

Well, we finished off the first two-day week of this new school year vertical and smiling! That's half the battle! :-) It was truly a great start, and I am so proud of our staff who came back from the summer holiday rested and committed to making this the best year ever for our students. Thank you to our many student leaders who acted as tour guides during the Welcome Back Barbeque and at school this week. Their smiling faces helped alleviate a lot of stress, especially for our new students!

TOSH Welcomes Tyler Durman!
September 13 and 14
We are pleased to have motivational speaker, Tyler Durman, with us for Parent Information Night (Sept. 13) and for a full school assembly (Sept. 14).  Tyler hails from California  and he is best known for his ability to make people laugh while telling stories that bring hope and wisdom. Each year his live presentations reach more than 200,000 students and adults, while his written stories are shared in homes throughout the U.S. and Canada. Tyler's session with parents/guardians starts at 6:30 p.m. sharp in our Gym on Sept. 13. You won't want to miss it, so spread the word! Thanks to our sponsors: Quality Inn and Suites Summerside and CSLC 2008 Legacy Fund!

The Power of Literacy!

We begin every day at Three Oaks with 15 minutes of silent reading time (staff AND students!) from 8:55-9:10 a.m. Please encourage your son or daughter to bring along something in print that they will enjoy. After all, that is what reading is all about!

School Policies and Procedures
Every student received a locker and agenda book on the first day of school, and we are currently collecting student fees ($26) from each student. Please try to have your child's fees paid by Wednesday of this week (Sept. 12). If there are any questions or concerns, feel free to call me at school or send an e mail message: nmhaire@edu.pe.ca. Our school policies and procedures are found in the Student Agenda. If you are new to Three Oaks, we ask that you review these with your child.

Dress Code: We Need Your Help!
The Three Oaks Dress Code can be found in our Student Agenda book, as well. The fashions this season are working against us, making it is very difficult to find shorts for girls that are the length we require (to the end of the fingertips when arms are extended by the sides). The hard and fast rule still applies to skirts and dresses, and shorts should be of a reasonable length (no inside pockets or questionable body parts visible please!). We are asking parents to help ensure that their children come to TOSH dressed in an appropriate and professional manner. If we have any issues with how your son/daughter is dressed on any given day, we will give you a call and either ask that you bring them home to change or provide them with some alternate clothing for the day. Bring on the cold weather! :-)
Thank you in advance for your support!

Smoking and the Woods
We have made it very clear to our students, both via PA announcements and individual classroom presentations, that students who must smoke are to stand behind the chain fence in the designated area close to Kenmoore Avenue. Standing anywhere else in our parking lot area means that students are smoking on school property, something our school policy prohibits. It is also important for students to note that the wooded area that borders our rugby field beside the school is private property and has been declared "off limits". Students found here will be charged with trespassing by city police and will face school discipline, as well. Students who are struggling with any addiction issues are always welcome to seek help in Student Services.
