Nicole's Notes: Volume 30 (April 28, 2014)

Celebrating Ms. Campbell's "Milestone" Birthday!
Happy Monday TOSH Parents and Guardians!

And then it was MAY! Wow! We will end this week on May 2 with the annual Area Association Day, which means no classes for PEI students. This is a day dedicated to business meetings for the various unions in which educational staffs are involved. Our instructional staff will be meeting at Westisle Composite High School that day to participate in an agenda prepared by the Western Area Teacher's Association (a local branch of the PEITF).

In other news, I attended an ELSB Principals' meeting last week in which the topic of student attendance (or lack thereof) was discussed. The Board has struck two committees to look at this issue: one for Elementary/Intermediate schools and one for High Schools. Their mandate will be to create Island-wide attendance policies for the various school levels that will be presented for consideration in Semester 2 of the 2014-15 school year. In the meantime, we encourage all our students to miss as little class time as possible and to arrive on time for class each and every day. Even an "excused" absence can mean loss of important instructional time, and it doesn't take long for students to feel like they are behind. Your support with this is greatly appreciated. We can't teach our students when they're not physically with us in school and being behind the 8 ball leads to undue stress on their part.

Please drop your donation off to the Main Office at the school during the school day on May 9. The sale will begin when school ends and continue into Saturday. Any parent/guardian willing to help at the table those two days can e mail Karen Smith at: smithkaren2@hotmail.com.

"IN OUR OWN BACKYARD" FUNDRAISING DRAW!
Reg and Toby MacDonald have organized another draw with ticket proceeds going to our school's "n Our Own Backyard" Breakfast and Lunch programs:

1st Prize: $100 of lobster and/or scallops
2nd Prize: $75 of Epicure spices
3rd Prize: $50 gift certificate from Kelly's Flower Shoppe

Tickets are now available in the Main Office and at the Parent Council Bake Sale at the Voye tournament May 9 & 10. The draw date is Friday, May 16...just in time for the Victoria Day weekend celebrations!

PARENTS AND GUARDIANS PLEASE BE ADVISED that "Prom Party" tickets are now printed and ready to be sold to students, apparently. While our Grad Prom is a school sanctioned event, the after party is NOT, as it is highly dangerous and involves underage drinking and drug use--something we obviously do not support. We just want parents to be aware if/when their child asks to attend prom party what risks are involved. The potential for harm is substantial and tickets, in the past, have been sold to students as young as junior high age and to those much older than high school age. We ask that you please give your decision to support this event some sober thought. We worry...every year.

Nicole's Notes: Volume 29 (April 21, 2014)

Happy Easter Monday TOSH Parents and Guardians!
Grad Pot Luck Supper Line :)

I hope that you enjoyed a restful long Easter weekend. The first of my three kids came home Easter Sunday, and I have to say that it is a little surreal to think that this year of post-secondary study for them has come to a close so soon. I plan to catch up on lots of missed hugs and stories of their many adventures in the weeks ahead. Seeing so many of our alumni trickling home is definitely one of the many exciting signs of Spring! However, there is still a lot of work to be done at TOSH as we launch into the final term of this school year. There will be many potential distractions in the days ahead as the warmer weather begins and the Grad prom nears. Please encourage your son/daughter to find the balance and keep on top of his/her school work as we enjoy the ride to June together!

You should have received your son/daughter's Semester 2 Progress Report Card by now. If you did not, and the copy has been lost, let us know in the Main Office and we will print you another one! Please take the time to read teacher comments, as they took a lot of time giving their descriptive feedback re: student progress.

Also, please note that "vapour cigarettes" will be treated like ordinary cigarettes: They should not be visible or used inside the school building. If students are seen with one of these, they will be asked to hand them in to the office and are expected to do so.

Welcome to Ms. Heidi Quinlan who is joining our staff as an Educational Assistant in the mornings from now until the end of the year!

This is Administrative Assistant Appreciation Week!
THANK YOU to our three Administrative Assistants for the excellent work they do each and every day to keep things running smoothly for us all!:
Linda Cashin and Pam Rodgerson (Main Office)
Donna MacKay (Student Services)

PARENT COUNCIL CORNER
When our Parent Council met last week, I shared the results from our recent Staff Survey. Three areas of major concern identified by our staff were:

1.  Student Work Ethic and Engagement (i.e. Students not handing in assignments-either on time or at all!)
2.  Attendance (i.e. Missing class time and perpetual lates)
3.  Quality of Student Work (i.e. Students handing in work that is below their ability level-done quickly, last minute, or with minimal effort)

We will be working internally and in collaboration with parents and students in the months leading up to September 2014 to consider how we can best tackle these complex issues head on for the 2014-15 school year. These are critical topics when we consider what must be in place in order for our students to be set up for success in high school and in the years beyond. Anything you can do at home to check in/help in the meantime is always appreciated.

Nicole's Notes: Volume 28 (April 14, 2014)

Tanner and Nicole accept a generous donation!
Happy Monday TOSH Parents and Guardians!

We were pretty pumped to get a five day week of learning in last week! It was also a busy one with our Grade 12 French Immersion students participating in the international DELF French proficiency testing. We heard very positive feedback from the examiners and are very proud of our students! A huge thank you goes out to Mme. Emma Boswell for keeping things running smoothly on site all week and to Mme. Fabienne Vialle for her preparation work with Mme. Boswell in the weeks prior to the test. A shout out to M. Mario Fiset, who is currently on leave, as well as Mme. Vialle for their work in preparing our students for this test the past three years.

Please note that there are no classes this coming Friday or next Monday due to the Easter holiday.

We also had some special visitors come to our school last week. The children at Summerside's Rainbow Day Care recently ran various fundraisers in support of the TOSH "In Our Own Backyard" Breakfast and Lunch program, and a group of 3 year olds from the day care brought in their $213 donation on Thursday. Who says that little ones can't change the world for the better?! THANK YOU, children of Rainbow Day Care, for setting such a great example for us all!

CONGRATULATIONS to Mr. Mark Gregory and his wife, Kathryn, on the birth of their twin boys last week: Nathan and Cameron!

PARENTS AND GUARDIANS PLEASE BE ADVISED that "prom party" tickets are now printed and ready to be sold to students, apparently.                                                     REPORT CARD DATE CHANGE!!

Report cards will be sent home with students this week on THURSDAY, APRIL 17.  If your son/daughter does not have a copy of his/her report card after Thursday, please contact the school and we will reissue a copy. Teachers spend a lot of time writing descriptive comments on these reports as feedback to you on your child's progress, so we want to be sure that you have a chance to read them and ask any questions you may have.

The TOSH branch of this organization has a goal of raising $10,000 to build a schoolhouse in a developing nation. They are asking that our students set aside $2 a day for one week-the price of a coffee each morning-and donate it to the cause. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated, and any community donations will be gratefully accepted in our Main Office via the schoolhouse shaped donation box located there! Income tax receipts can be issued upon request for donations over $20.
Sweets and treats will also be sold every Wednesday at noon outside the Lecture Theatre during the month of April. Anyone wishing further information can contact Mrs. Tammy Craig (txcraig@edu.pe.ca)
